To begin adding an image to your own Gmail signature, fire up a new message window (File " New) and click Compose from within Drive. From here simply enter all the details required for your message including recipient(s), subject line, body, etc., but leave the Signature box blank.

Now go back to the previous screen where you added your first signature, and open the menu at the top of the page. Click Settings & Filters... Then select Create filter… In addition to entering the email address of the individual whose signature you want to change, fill out the Filter Name field so it matches the default signature you're replacing. For most people, this would likely be John Doe.

Next, choose Upload file and browse through your Drive until you locate the image you wish to use. You'll see some options under When uploading a document checkbox whether to make the changes immediately upon saving them or when you next save your draft. Choose Immediately if possible, otherwise pick Save draft every time.

Finally, once the image appears in the preview pane, hit Apply Changes. Your new signature now displays whenever you send a mail via Gmail. Note that since we didn't actually upload anything yet, you won't have access to your newly-updated signature right away.

In order to view it, return to your inbox and compose another email. After clicking Send, head over to My Drive " Files and look around again. You might spot something called Templates. Open this folder and scroll down to Images. Find what looks like a JPEG and drag it onto your desktop. Now launch File Explorer and navigate to Desktop followed by Pictures. Inside you'll see a PNG file bearing the same filename as the template you found earlier. Right-click this file and select Rename " Change extension... and replace ".jpg" with".png."

After doing this, double-clicking the icon should reveal your new signature. As before, note that while it may take anywhere between 1 second and several minutes depending on your internet speed, you still don't yet have access to it. Instead, wait until the next day when you should find it waiting inside your Drive account. Also keep in mind that if someone else uses your computer while you are viewing this content, they could potentially grab hold of the image too. To prevent this, either close File Explorer after renaming the file (or disable viewing permissions altogether).

Why can't I put an image in my Gmail signature?

The reason why you can't insert an image directly into your signature is quite simple. When you make changes to a document, say a Word document, things stay exactly the same unless you specifically apply formatting options. On the contrary, Google Docs allows you to alter documents while keeping everything intact.

When you paste an image into your signature, the image gets converted automatically to JPG format. And since you probably saved your original image on your PC instead of creating a linked version in Google Drive, you won't be able to edit the size of the embedded image. So even though it now displays correctly, the actual dimensions aren't compatible with the width of your browser screen. As a result, the image ends up looking stretched horizontally.

That said, you can always change the uploaded image itself to increase the resolution. Just double click on the image icon located right under the newly added text box. That opens up a dropdown menu containing several different sizes. Resize it according to your preference. Afterward, you can save the modified image back to your computer.

Note: Make sure you’re pasting the exact dimensions of your monitor into the Width parameter whenever you resize the image. Otherwise, the image will look distorted. Also remember to set the height parameter accordingly.

Another option is to convert the image to GIF format. To do this, right click on the image, choose Properties, switch to the Metadata tab, check Show advanced properties, and finally tick Convert colors. Now close the dialog box and reopen your signature editor. Again, click "more," select "attachments," and choose "insert." Paste the resulting image and resave it.

Now that you understand why you can't insert images directly into your signature, hopefully you realize why doing so causes problems too. For instance, if you were to replace the default word "signature" with a larger image, the rest of the text becomes blurry due to automatic scaling.
